En 2018, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, comúnmente conocido como AMLO, anunció la construcción del Tren Maya o Tren Maya. Este ferrocarril interurbano de más de 1500 km de largo que conectará varias ciudades alrededor de la Península de Yucatán está programado para completarse en 2024. AMLO afirma que el proyecto del Tren Maya aumentará las actividades turísticas y fomentará un mayor desarrollo de la Península de Yucatán. Si bien hay beneficios obvios de este proyecto, como la creación de empleo y el impacto económico que traerá a la región, muchos lugareños, periodistas y organizaciones internacionales señalan el peaje que se necesitará para completar este proyecto y cómo se está procediendo ilegalmente. La península de Yucatán es conocida por su rica naturaleza, sus playas de arena blanca y sus pirámides mayas, lo que la convierte en un destino popular para turistas nacionales e internacionales. La segunda selva tropical más grande de Latinoamérica, el segundo arrecife de coral más grande del mundo y el río subterráneo más largo del mundo se concentran en esta región, hogar de muchos animales endémicos y casi amenazados, como el jaguar. Además, aún quedan muchos artefactos mayas y prehistóricos por descubrir bajo la frágil estructura del suelo llamada karst. Esto es lo que crea las cuevas y cenotes (sumideros naturales) por los que es famosa la región. La construcción y el funcionamiento del Tren Maya ponen todo esto en peligro de destrucción.
Este documental intenta comunicar el impacto que el proyecto del Tren Maya tiene sobre el medio ambiente, los artefactos históricos, los derechos humanos y la vida de la población local, y arrojar luz sobre aquellos que luchan contra este proyecto a pesar del peligro que supone.
Sobre el Movimiento Selvamedeltren: Selvamedeltren es un juego de palabras donde se utiliza "selva" = "jungla", y "salvame" = "sálvame", para decir "sálvame (selva) del tren".

Description In 2018, Andrés Manuel López Obrador commonly referred to as AMLO, announced the construction of Tren Maya, or Mayan Train. This 1500+ km long intercity railway connecting various cities around the Yucatan Peninsula is scheduled to be completed by 2024. AMLO claims Mayan Train project will increase tourist activities and encourage further development of the Yucatan Peninsula. While there are obvious benefits to this project such as job creation and the economic impact it will bring to the region, many locals, journalists, and international organizations point out the toll it will take to complete this project and how it is being proceeded illegally. Yucatan Peninsula is well known for its rich nature, white sand beaches and Mayan pyramids, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. Second largest tropical rainforest in Latin America, second largest coral reef in the world, and the longest underground river in the world are all concentrated in this region, being home to many endemic and near threatened animals such as jaguars. Moreover, there are still many Mayan and prehistoric artifacts that have not been discovered under the fragile soil structure called karst. This is what creates the caves and cenotes (natural sinkholes) that the region is famous for. The construction and the operation of the Mayan Train puts all of these at a risk of destruction.
This documentary attempts to communicate the impact the Mayan Train project has on the environment, historical artifacts, human rights, and the lives of the local people and shedding a light on those who are fighting against this project despite the danger it poses.
About the Selvamedeltren Movement: Selvamedeltren is a word play where it uses “selva” = “jungle”, and “salvame” = “save me”, to say “save me (jungle) from the train”.
